Overlapping generation segment on the new Circuit Assembly program
by traveb inso there i was at the circuit assembly sunday morning with my eyes glazed over as usual when all of a sudden, bam!
a demo with two brothers talking about the new overlapping generation teaching.
the reason it took me by surprise was because it occured during the second talk of the sunday morning symposium, "sanctify god's name by your speech".

A sketch on an assembly about someone that doesn't understand their latest change. I believe it's unprecedented.
i think the generation change didn't go over as smoothly as they expected. they thought they could sneak it in there casually, on the 16th paragraph i think it was of a WT study that wasn't even about that, and a mention at the closing talk of the next assembly. but in reality, changing the entire definition of a common word is too far-fetched, and also people use the internet now. so, i'll bet they wished they had never brought it up, but now the damage is done.

"I'm not serving with a date in mind anyway", and "Even if it's wrong, it's still the best way to live".
i too hear so many of those type of remarks. it's as if they know it's wrong, or just dont care whether it's right or wrong, they just don't want to be disturbed in their pattern of life.

that will be an interesting part to see! more and more it seems they have to reach for anything at all that might work. are they getting desperate?
maybe the mental shield will go up quicker for some as Sir82 mentioned, but i suspect this constant need to justify themselves will get more to think. especially if it's being said from the stage that "it changes every year".. perhaps ones who never thought about it before will notice "hey yeah, it does change all the time!"
either way, i'm sure these kind of assembly parts are in part direct answers to this forum, just like last weeks hot topic WT study's "more interested in gods unfolding purpose than in shielding themselves from criticism." it has come down to this rediculous plea to hang on to on-the-fence members.

Today's Watchtower Lesson Really Bothered Me...
by dontplaceliterature ini was a hair away from telling my wife i never wanted to go to the kingdom hall again after today's watchtower.
the conductor mentioned something along the lines of..."if you think having to shun your disfellowshipped children is bad...you should read up on the israelites.
when one of their children was disobedient to the law, they had to take the before the judges so that they could be stoned to death...and guess who's job it was throw the first stone?".

there was also a reinstated girl quoted in the article saying how her family member's strict adherence to the rules helped her come back because she missed the association or something. i thought it was so biased how they use one example of a case where this rule ended up with the people involved being "happy" about it, versus the hundreds of torn apart families. but i also saw it as a very cunning way of diverting the real issue, and instead making it about the happiness of the family being together (whether or not in a cult). i can see how for those believing this is the 100% truth, this seems a valid argument, as anything to help them get back in is worth the effort, but if you eliminate that bias, it sounds like they're saying belief doesnt matter just join the club and hang out with the gang.

there were other aspects of the study that bothered me as well. i can't quote it precisely since i dont have it here with me, but one part talked of the son leaving because he prefers "the temporary enjoyment of sin, over a relationship with jehovah and his parents". that short statement had me disagreeing in three ways.
1- it is meant to fool witnesses who dont know any better, that the only reason young ones ever leave the org is because they want to party their asses off and live a 'worldly' lifestyle. though it's true for some, there's no mention of all those who leave because of doctrinal or historical reasons, thereby not calling to mind the validity of such reasons, and creating the illusion that all those leaving are wrong in doing so.
2- saying they prefer it over a relationship with jehovah. if they have independantly come to the conclusion that there is no jehovah or god at all, then prefering a relationship with him isn't even a factor.
3- of course nearly all WOULD like to keep a relationship with their parents, but they realize that keeping that relationship comes at the cost of living a lie, pretending to believe in things they no longer believe in.

worst comment i heard:
"when my daughter got disfellowshipped, it was really hard because i had never thought of her as being 'wicked', and yet that's how i knew i had to start viewing her."
this comment was made by an older sister who is actually a really really sweet person who cares alot about her family, so that made it even more abundantly clear to me that it's not so much the fault of individual witnesses as it is of the controlling organization they are victims of.
i felt bad for her and outraged at the org.

that was indeed a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE article! made my blood boil and i'm sure i was visibly disturbed.
at the same time i think it can be good when such articles come along, because as opposed to the tame "christian qualities" ones, they have the potential of shaking things up a little and waking up people who still have a bit of their natural conscience left.
